From January to May 2009 CBI convened a group of member companies to examine how the new global climate change agreement, to be agreed at Copenhagen in December 2009, can best support business in researching, developing and deploying low-carbon technology.
While national and regional action is very important in this area, the global agreement can help to support the research, development and deployment of low-carbon technology through:
- Ensuring a concerted global effort to increase energy efficiency
- Scaling up and improving the global carbon market
- Providing additional support to essential low-carbon technologies
- Creating the right environments for low carbon investment – notably through protecting intellectual property.
This paper was presented to UK officials from the UK Department for Energy and Climate Change, Department for International Development, and the Intellectual Property Office at a successful international climate change workshop at CBI on 22 May 2009.
